Turn off accessories and reinstall coil hi-tension
lead. Start engine and adjust engine speed to
OPEN REGULATOR TEST
1500-2000
Reading should be at least 30 amps.
RPM. Quickly observe ammeter.
IMPORTANT: This test requires removal of regu-
lator.

If reading is low, stop engine and connect a jump-
er wire between alternator output terminal and
regulator terminal. Repeat Steps 4 and 5.

CAUTION
To prevent electrical system damage and/or
sparks, disconnect battery cables at battery.
If reading is now within specifications, diodes are
faulty. Disassemble alternator and replace
rectifier as explained under “Alternator Repair,”
following, to determine if fault is in regulator or
alternator.
1. Remove insulator cap from regulator terminal.

With ignition switch on and engine not running,
check for battery voltage at alternator output ter-
minal (Test 1) and regulator terminal (Test 2).

If reading is still low with jumper wire connected,
perform “Voltage Output Test,” following, to de-
termine if fault is in regulator or alternator.

lator to the alternator.
