CHARGING SYSTEM
SERVICE MANUAL NUMBER 26
Installation
1.
Position alternator in mounting bracket and install mounting bolt, washers (if used),
spacer and nut. Place washers (if used), on each side of spacer. DO NOT tighten
securely at this time.

Fasten alternator brace to alternator with bolt, washers and spacer (if used). DO NOT
tighten bolt at this time.
Position alternator drive belt on pulleys and adjust tension as explained under “Drive
Belt Tension Adjustment.”
Reconnect wiring harness to alternator and negative battery cable to battery.

a - Excitation Lead - PURPLE
b - Sensing Lead - RED/PURPLE
c - Ground Lead - BLACK
d - Output Lead - ORANGE
IMPORTANT: Alternators used on MerCruiser engines ARE NOT equipped with an
isolation diode.
CAUTION
Follow battery isolator manufacturer’s instructions for wire gauge. Battery isolator
installation must conform to BIA Low Voltage Wiring Standard No. 125-79.
NOTE: MerCruiser engines equipped with a 3-wire, belt driven alternator can use a battery
isolator.
