required by the indications on the dip sticks.
Refer to Table 1: “SAE Viscosity Chart” and your
engine manual included in the owner’s packet.
Follow engine manufacturer’s recommendations.
If engine floods:
•
Disengage shift. Move handle to full throttle
position.
DO NOT USE MULTIGRADE OIL. Power steering
and power trim use automatic trans mission fluid.
Check the fluid levels in the vertical drive units or
transmission as often as practical.
•
•
Turn key switch to the START position.
Immediately move the control handle to the neutral
detent (idle) position when the engine starts.

ANTICIPATED
Failure to move the control handle to the idle
position immediately when engine starts will
allow engine to “over-rev” and engine damage
could result. “Over-revving” engine after off-
season storage could also damage the water
pump impeller. When starting engine for the
first time after off-season storage, always idle
engine for one minute to allow the water
pump to prime.

3.
4.
Start and operate the bilge blower system for at
least four (4) minutes before start-up.
3. As soon as engine starts:
Lower the vertical outdrive units (on applicable
models) making sure the water intakes are under
the water.
a.
b.
Release key to the ON or RUN position.
Move control handle to the fast idle position to
warm up engine. DO NOT exceed 1000 RPM.
B. Cold Engine Start (Carbureted Engines)
C. Cold Engine Start (Carbureted Engines with
“Turn Key Start”)
1.
The engine may require priming prior to starting.
To prime the engine, proceed as follows:
1
2
Place the remote control handle in neutral.
a.
b.
c.
Place ignition switch in the OFF position.
Disengage shift mechanism.
Turn ignition key to START. Release key when
engine starts and allow switch to return to ON po-
sition. Allow engine to warm up (6-10 minutes on
first start of the day). The engine will normally idle
at 900-1000 RPM and then return to normal idle
RPM of approximately 750 RPM.
Move control handle to the full throttle
position; this operates accelerator pump
and primes the engine.
d.
e.
Repeat priming, if necessary.
3. If engine does not start after 3 attempts:
Return the control handle to neutral detent
(idle) position.
a.
Push the throttle only button and position the
remote control handle/throttle lever to the1/4
throttle position.
2.
Turn key switch to START position and hold until
engine starts. DO NOT hold in START position for
more than ten seconds. In colder weather, more
priming may be necessary. However, too much
priming may flood engine.
b.
Turn ignition key to START. Release key
when engine starts and allow switch to return
to ON position.
