262 CID (4.3L) ENGINES
PISTON SELECTION
1.
Check used piston to cylinder bore clearance as follows:
a. Measure cylinder bore diameter with a telescope gauge 2-1/2 in. (64 mm) from top
of cylinder bore as shown.

b. Measure piston diameter at skirt across center line of piston pin as shown.

c. Subtract piston diameter from cylinder bore diameter to determine piston-to-bore
clearance.
Determine if piston-to-bore clearance is in acceptable “Specifications” range.

If used piston is not satisfactory, determine if a new piston can be selected to fit cylinder
bore within acceptable range.
If cylinder bore must be reconditioned, measure new piston diameter (across centerline
of piston pin), then hone cylinder bore to correct clearance (preferable range).
Mark piston to identify cylinder for which it was fitted.
