Timing Chain and Sprocket
Removal

Remove torsional damper, oil pan and crankcase front cover.
Turn crankshaft until timing marks on crankshaft and camshaft sprockets are in
alignment.

Remove camshaft sprocket and timing chain. (If sprocket does not come off easily, a
light tap on the lower edge of the sprocket using a plastic mallet, should dislodge it.)
Remove crankshaft sprocket if it requires replacement.
Cleaning and Inspection

Clean all parts in solvent and dry with compressed air.
Inspect timing chain for wear and damage.
Inspect sprockets for wear and damage.
Installation - Timing Chain

Install crankshaft sprocket if removed.
CAUTION
When timing marks are aligned in this procedure, the No. 4 cylinder is on
compression (TDC); therefore, if the distributor is to be installed, the rotor MUST
BE positioned at the No. 4 post on the distributor cap.

Install timing chain on camshaft sprocket. Hold sprocket vertical with chain hanging
down. Align marks on camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.
IMPORTANT: Do not attempt to drive sprocket on camshaft, as welsh plug at rear of
engine can be dislodged.

Install sprocket on camshaft. Torque bolts to 18 lb-ft (24 Nm).
Lubricate timing chain with engine oil.
Install crankcase front cover and torsional damper.
