EMERGENCY START” - With the battery selector
H - 5 12 VOLT ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT
A. Helm Equipment
switch placed at the 6 o’clock position places the
switch in the “EMERGENCY START” position, the
batteries are connected in parallel. Both batteries
will be used by the engine and all 12 volt equipment.
Both batteries will be charged by the alternator.
However, the batteries will charge at a slower rate
compared to setting the switch in the other positions.
The ignition is protected by circuit breaker located on
the ignition switch panel itself. See Figure H5. Equip-
ment on the helm switch panel (Figures H6 & H7) as
well as various other equipment is protected by a helm
circuit breaker panel previously discussed in Section
H-1. This panel is located underneath the helm. The
circuit breakers provide protection for certain compo-
nent wiring which are identified on the panel itself.
Note: Certain optional equipment may be identified on
the panel and will be protected by this helm circuit
breaker panel if installed. See Figures H3 & H4.
The use of one battery at a time is recommended.
Position the battery selector switch to either the
“Position 1” or “Position 2”.
Under normal conditions, avoid using the “EMER-
GENCY START” position. Use the “EMERGENCY
START” position only when a single battery is not
capable of starting the engine.
Ignition Circuit Breaker
Four Winns recommends alternating between
batteries during boating. Depending upon boating
use, this may increase battery longevity. Use battery
#1
for the first day of a cruise and switch to battery
#2
on the second day.
Position the battery selector switch to the battery
that has sufficient power to start the engine (normally
position “1”). After the engine is running, turn the
battery selector switch to the battery that has the
lowest charge. This will allow the alternator to charge
the low battery. Utilizing the battery selector switch in
this manner (instead of using the “EMERGENCY
START” position) will supply a greater charge to the
battery and minimize the risk of both batteries being
depleted.

FOR EXAMPLE: If battery #1 is fully charged and
battery #2 is in need of a charge, use battery #1
to start the engine. After the engine is running and
warmed-up, turn the battery selector switch to the
3
o’clock position to place the switch at the
“Position 2”. This will permit the alternator to charge
the low, #2 battery.

A voltmeter is incorporated in the “four-in-one” gauge
which is installed in the dash panel to monitor the
condition of the engine battery. Additional information
on the voltmeter may be found in the engine owner’s
manual.
