MUST be serviced before storage.
If the outboard has been in salt water:
•
Run the engine for approximately five min-
utes in fresh water at full operating temper-
ature. Refer to Flushing on p. 32.
Spray the entire engine with fresh water to
remove salt deposits.
•
After five submersions, the flywheel must be
removed and the valley between the crank-
shaft and the stator windings must be
cleaned.
PROLONGED SUBMERSION
When the engine begins to turn freely, pull an
additional 8-20 times. This will help drain wa-
ter that might be trapped in the cylinders.
Tilt outboard to the normal running position.
Replace emergency stop clip and lanyard.
Squeeze primer bulb several times until defi-
nite resistance is felt.
With twist grip in the slowest position, pull
starter handle to start engine.
The 55MFE is designed to be attached to the
back of a Zodiac CRRC. Due to the extreme
operating conditions that this engine may ex-
perience during combat, BRP has incorporat-
ed a crankcase drain system to allow the
engine to be de-watered should submersion
occur.
Prolonged submersion, or submersion at
depths beyond several feet may cause en-
gine damage.
After engine has run at IDLE speed for 30-60
seconds, turn drain valves to the RUN posi-
tion.
If prolonged submersion occurs, even if the
engine can be started, the engine must be
disassembled and cleaned.
DO NOT attempt to start the outboard if sand
or silt may have entered the engine. Disas-
semble and clean.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT run the outboard with
the drain valves in the DRAIN position more
than 3 minutes. Engine damage can result.
Continue to run under normal operating con-
ditions (boat on plane) for at least 30 minutes
(2500
RPM or above).
IMPORTANT: You MUST run the outboard
after the de-water procedure to dry out inter-
nal moisture.
Stop engine and run the Winterizing Proce-
dure on p. 33.
