USING YOUR EVINRUDE E-TEC OUTBOARD
Move the shift lever to NEUTRAL. Refer to Grasp tilt grip
on engine cover and tilt outboard to the full tilt posi-
tion. on page 23.
Starting
While seated, grasp the starter handle and pull slowly until
the starter engages, then pull hard. Repeat, if needed, until
outboard starts.
NOTICE
To prevent damage to starter assem-

bly, allow starter cord to rewind before releasing
starter handle.

NEUTRAL
WARNING
Always shift to NEUTRAL before starting the out-
board to prevent sudden boat movement, which can
cause injury.
1. Starter handle
IMPORTANT: Engine will not start if outboard is in gear or
if lanyard is not in place.
Twist throttle grip to slowest idle position.
If your outboard does not react normally to this starting pro-
cedure or if it fails to start, refer to TROUBLESHOOTING
on page 38.

After Engine Starts
Check the water pump indicator. A steady stream of water
indicates the water pump is working. If a steady stream of
water from the water pump indicator is not visible, stop the
engine. Refer to ENGINE OVERHEATING on page 27.

Slowest idle position
DO NOT advance the throttle before start-up. Advancing
the throttle overrides the electronic idle control system. Af-
ter the engine starts, the engine management module
(
EMM) automatically increases idle speed slightly. Idle
speed will decrease as the engine warms up.
