R. Portable Generator Sets
4. General
a. Worn piston rings and valves
Never use a portable generator on a boat.
b. Engine temperature - Cold running engines in-
creaseCOproduction. Enginecoolingwatersys-
tem design and selection of thermostat(s) are
primary considerations affecting engine operat-
ingtemperature. Generally,anengineproduces
less CO if it operates at a relatively high tem-
perature within manufacturer’s specifications.

sets discharge their exhaust products in locations which
cancauseaccumulationofcarbonmonoxideintheaccom-
modation space. Do not use gasoline powered por-
table generators on Four Winns® boats.
c. Exhaust Back-Pressure - Certain alterations to
the exhaust system may increase engine ex-
haust back pressure and CO production.
S. Maintenance - Engine Performance
EfficientengineperformanceisvitaltominimizingCOpro-
duction. Thefollowingitemsarethoseconsideredtohave
the greatest effect on increased CO production:
d. Restricted engine room or compartment ventila-
tion
T.
Maintenance - External Conditions

2.
Fuel Systems - Fuel that is contaminated, stale or

Incorrect selection of propeller size
c. Worn float needle valve and seat
d. Highfloatlevel
U. Maintenance - Exhaust System Integrity
Gas tight integrity of exhaust systems must be main-
tained to insure that leakage of CO within the boat does
not occur. Disassembly may be required to carry out a
thorough inspection. Repair or replace components as
indicated. Inspect the following:
e. Incorrect idle mixture adjustment
f.
Dirty or worn injectors
