X OPERATION
Move  the  remote   control  handle  to  NEU-    Starting
TRAL.
Turn  the  key  switch  fully  clockwise  to  the
START position.

NOTICE
The starter motor can be dam-

that does not have start-in-gear pre-
vention, the outboard can be started
while  it  is  in  gear.  Protect  against
unexpected    boat    movement    by
always   starting  your   outboard   in
NEUTRAL.

Set control to SLOWEST speed position.
Upon start-up, release the key.
If the engine did not start, release the key mo-
mentarily, then try again.

Each time the key switch  is turned from OFF
to ON, the warning system will self-test. Refer
to  Engine  Monitoring  on  page  44.  If  the
warning system fails  to self-test during  start-
up, see your Dealer.
If  your outboard  does not  react  normally to
this starting procedure or if it fails to start, re-
fer to Troubleshooting on page 60.

SLOWEST speed position
DO NOT advance the throttle before start-up.
Advancing the throttle overrides the electron-
ic idle control system. After the engine starts,
the engine management  module (EMM) au-
tomatically increases idle speed slightly. Idle
speed will decrease as the engine warms up.
The engine  monitor gauge  lights  or display
will illuminate if the throttle is advanced.
