CRANKCASE OIL AND FILTER
Initial Fill
Changing the Filter

Remove the upper engine cover, the aft cov-
er latch and the starboard lower engine cov-
er.
IMPORTANT: 4-Stroke outboards are shipped
without oil in the crankcase. You must add oil to
the crankcase before starting the engine for the
first time. It is recommended you add Evinrude/
Johnson 4-Stroke outboard oil. Refer to Changing
the Oil for acceptable substitute lubricants.
BEFORE filling the crankcase for the first time, be
sure it is empty by checking the dipstick. Refer to
Checking.
After the first 10 hours of operation, replace the
break-in lubricant with Evinrude/Johnson Ultra 4-
Stroke synthetic blend oil. Refer to 10-Hour In-
spection.

Starboard lower engine cover screws
Check the oil level when the engine is cold to en-
sure an accurate reading.

Place a rag under the oil filter on the engine.
Remove the filter by turning it countercloock-
wise.
Use clean oil to lubricate the gasket on a new
oil filter. Make sure the filter gasket is firmly
seated in its groove.
Install the filter and tighten 2/3 of a revolution
after the gasket contacts base. Hand tighten
only. Remove rag and any spilled oil.

Place the engine in a vertical position and re-
move the upper engine cover.
Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, and install

Move the dipstick again and locate the line of
oil. If the line of oil is not between the ADD
and the FULL marks, you must add or re-
move oil as indicated.

Reinstall the lower engine cover, aft cover,
latch, and upper engine cover.

Securely install the dipstick and wipe up any
spilled oil.
IMPORTANT: Operating the engine with too much
or too little oil in the crankcase will damage it.
